Correct call on Aaron Rodgers' return won't make Packers execs any less nervous

  • Night net null null Now that Aaron Rodgers is ready to return for the Packers’ stretch run in 2017, are we looking at shades of 2010 with a Rodgers-fueled playoff/Super Bowl run for Green Bay?Or will we see a Tony Romo-like recurring collarbone problem that could derail the future Hall of Famer's career? IYER: Rodgers returns to better offenseAs Packers coach Mike McCarthy said, Rodgers and Green Bay's doctors/training staff deserve credit for his aggressive rehab and quick return from a broken right collarbone sustained in Week 6. The speculation at the time was that Rodgers' season was over; it would take extensive rehab lasting through the entire season because it was the collarbone on his throwing side. Instead, the QB is back within the minimum eight weeks allowed after being placed on designated to return injured reserve. Also credit Rodgers' teammates, including backup Brett Hundley, for going 3-4 in his absence. If the Packers were not sitting at 7-6 and in the playoff hunt, general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy likely would have sat Rodgers the rest of the way.In my GM days, I would not have risked our franchise quarterback coming off a significant injury in the last three weeks of a lost season regardless of how badly h[......]

Andrew Luck, still not throwing, running out of time to ease Colts' anxiety

  • Night net null With less than two months until training camp and as the Colts’ offseason program winds down, Andrew Luck still is not throwing in team drills. Despite proclamations of the Indianapolis front office that the quarterback will be ready to go full tilt on Day 1 of camp, there surely is plenty of nervousness being kept under wraps.I understand it's important for the leadership of an organization to put on a good public face to keep concern from turning into panic when the face of the franchise is the focal point. When I was a GM, thankfully I never had to deal with our starting quarterback missing the entire prior season and ensuing offseason as he tried to return from a major injury. But I was plenty uneasy with situations such as that involving our Vikings first-round running back Robert Smith, who came back from two ACL surgeries. Things turned out well in Smith’s case; he had several Pro Bowl seasons after overcoming his injuries. In the Luck case, we're talking about Colts owner Jim Irsay, general manager Chris Ballard and coach Frank Reich trying to reassure players, coaches, team staff, fans, media and sponsors that the team's best player will indeed be steering the ship this season as the team seeks to rebound from last year's 4-12 disaster. And they also want Luck to know they believe in and are countin[......]

Ezekiel Elliott contract: Cowboys star's no deal-no play ultimatum 'news to us,' COO says

  • Night net null null Holdout running back Ezekiel Elliott's representatives have told the Cowboys he won't play this season without a new contract, ESPN.com reported Tuesday, citing a source close to the situation. However, according to the report, the source added that Elliott holding out into the regular season is not likely at this time, given that Elliott and Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones want to get a deal done before the team's regular-season opener Sept. 8. On Tuesday afternoon, Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones, who characterized the team's offer to Elliott as "very generous," told 105.3 The Fan that the ultimatum is "news to us and it certainly doesn't change anything."On Monday, former Night net running back Eric Dickerson said on FS1's "Undisputed" that he spoke with Elliott's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, who according to Dickerson said it was possible Elliott would miss part of the regular season but that Elliott and his representatives didn't want that to happen. With the Cowboys' preseason starting Saturday and their season opener just more than a month away, Stephen Jones hardly sounded optimistic Tuesday."Oh, I think you can easily get out of Oxnard (without getting deals done). Eagles vs. Falcons results: Julio Jones' TD withstands Carson Wentz's magic

  • Night net null null null null Carson Wentz completed numerous improbable passes to keep his Eagles in their game vs. the Falcons on Sunday night, but he could not overcome Julio Jones' 54-yard touchdown reception on fourth-and-3 late in the fourth quarter that became the difference in a 24-20 Atlanta win. The Falcons were trailing 20-17 with 2:20 to play when Jones took a screen pass from Matt Ryan and raced untouched to the end zone to put the Falcons up. Not long after, Wentz's magic came up half a yard short when his fourth-down pass to tight end Zach Ertz didn't quite reach the first-down marker. Atlanta ended the game with a kneel. Philadelphia took its first lead of the night on a drive Wentz extended by barely getting a third-down pass off before his knee hit the turf on a potential sack. Four plays later, he scored on a 1-yard sneak and then hit Ertz for a two-point conversion to put the Birds up by three points with 3:13 to play. On the final drive, Wentz heaved a fourth-and-14 pass downfield and somehow found wide receiver Nelson Agholor. MORE: Watch Night[......]

Colts bash Night net for controversial non-review of apparent Deshaun Watson fumble

  • Night net null null null null In the final two minutes of Thursday night's Colts-Texans game, Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson appeared to lose the ball on a rush attempt as he tried to bleed time off the clock.Colts players frantically motioned with their arms around the ensuing pile to indicate they believed they had gained possession. Officials, however, ruled the Texans had recovered the football, meaning it remained Houston's ball with the Texans leading 20-17.Controversially, there was no announced video review of the play. Indianapolis could not initiate a challenge because the clock was well beyond the two-minute warning.Houston ran out the game's remaining seconds after the near-giveaway to claim a key victory in the AFC South divisional race. Why didn't the officials at least review this? Philip Rivers' retirement is reminder that clock has expired for Big Ben, and Steelers need to help him accept it

  • Night net American Football Philip Rivers retired Wednesday, and he surely was not the first. Eli Manning, the initial quarterback chosen among the “Class of 2004,” played his final game in 2019. Tight end Kellen Winslow, whom the Cleveland Browns picked rather than select a QB, has been gone from the league since 2013. Tackle Shawn Andrews, according to legend the player Steelers coach Bill Cowher argued to select that year, has been absent from the league for more than a decade. Ben Roethlisberger outlasted them all.So he has that, and two Super Bowl rings, and six Pro Bowl appearances, and more fourth-quarter comebacks than all but three other men, more QB victories than all but four others, more playoff wins than all but five others, more passing yards than all but six others and more touchdown passes than all but seven others. This should be enough. It is time.MORE: Colts' best replacements for Philip Rivers I will not insult Roethlisberger by trotting out the Chuck Noll cliché that Big Ben needs to get on with this life’s work. Because this has been his life’s work. To suggest otherwise is to devalue the sacrifice and achievements of anyone who has been a professional athlete this long, this successfully. He has earned a quarter of a billion dollars playing this game. He can afford whatever retirement activity he wis[......]
